Cleaning and care of Pearls and Gemstones
Pearls The most important thing to remember about cleaning and care of Pearls is that they are soft and easily damaged; and more delicate than other gemstones or precious metals. For that reason, they need very special cleaning and care routines. Store them in the box they came in or in a silk bag, separate from other items that might scratch and chip of the surface of the pearls. Do not store them inside a plastic bag, (this is very important) because that prevents them from breathing and getting the moisture that they need. Never clean pearls in an ultrasonic cleaner. It can damage them. After you wear them, wipe them off with a soft cloth. This will prevent dirt from accumulating and remove any residue from other substances, like perspiration, that can eat away the natural nacre of the pearls. Pearls can be washed in a solution of water and mild soap, like Ivory. Dry them with a soft cloth. Do not hang the string to dry because that stretches the silk cord they are strung with. To keep the luster of the pearls buff them up with a silk cloth. Pearl necklaces should be restrung periodically. Do not clean pearls with toothpaste. Remove your jewelry before working with any products that contain harsh chemicals, such as chlorine, alcohol, or any detergents. Before you put on your jewelry, let any cosmetics and perfume dry. Gemstones Store gemstone pieces individually in soft pouches. Some gemstones require specific care and cleaning procedures but as a general rule after wearing, wipe your gemstone jewelry thoroughly with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth to remove any chemicals, oils or perspiration. This will maintain the gemstone's luster and keep your jewelry clean before it is stored. Do not subject gemstone jewelry to sudden temperature changes. Many gemstones are very delicate and susceptible to temperature changes. There are many different types of colored gemstones.
Here is a chart that gives some specific information about cleaning and care for gemstones.
The safest way to clean a gemstone is to wash it in lukewarm water using a mild liquid soap. Then dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Remove your jewelry before working with any products that contain harsh chemicals, such as chlorine, alcohol, or any detergents. These chemicals may erode the finish and polish of gemstones. Hair spray, perfume and perspiration also causes jewelry to become dull. Before you put on your gemstone jewelry, let any cosmetics and perfume dry.
