Gold filled is not something filled with gold. It is the opposite. It is gold, filled with a base metal. A tube of 14 karat (or other karat) gold is permanently bonded to a inner core of base metal, usually copper. By law, gold filled has to be at least 1/20th of the weight of the finished metal, so gold filled has a lot more gold than gold plate, which only has to be a few microns thick. Because the whole outside of the metal is 14 karat gold, everything you see and that touches your skin in gold-filled jewelry is actually 14 karat gold and it's tarnish resistant.
