A Different Perspective on Creating an Online Business

About two and a half years ago I decided to create a web site in order to sell jewelry ( Necklaces, Bracelets , Earrings). I had been making jewelry for about 4 years and wanted to show my pieces and test the internet market.

I did have a good knowledge of computer programs (like word processors and spreadsheets) but no experience whatsoever with building web sites or the knowledge of the software programs that make it possible. What I had, was determination and the desire to do it. Never did I think then that, in spite of all the anxiety or frustrations that you may encounter, little by little I would accumulate the tools and knowledge to be able to do it.

Knowing nothing about web hosting sites, I started looking around searching for companies that I could work with. That is the first step in this quest and the first stumbling block too. It takes a while to find out and decide what a good hosting site for you to choose is.

If you are a beginner, like I was, you don’t want to spend a lot of money. You have too many doubts about whether this effort will work out or not and you have no idea about the type of work it involves. To put it simply, you are practically lost!

I did look around and talked to web designers that advertised their expertise at low prices, but when I talked to them I still found them to be very expensive. I also checked the very inexpensive Web hosting sites. The problem that you run into at those sites is: How am I going to write and design my page, my site and all that goes with it??

By chance, looking carefully at all search results for my queries, I found a site that was described as being, lets say, a step-by-step tutorial site called "SiteSell" so I decided to check it out. I bought into it and initially found it to be difficult and time consuming. I truly didn’t understand at first what it was all about. I had to very frequently stop and take a deep breath and relax. I even wanted to quit at times. I realized that I wanted to have the solution before doing the work!

I am still surprised about how I went from that state of shock and anxiety to what my site looks like today. I guess you can say that it happened through a slow and long process of working through what seemed a maze little by little. I am not writing this to discourage people; on the contrary, what I want to say is that in spite all the difficulties that you may encounter, it can be done! You can build your own web site.

I am still struggling with new issues now like: How do I get more traffic? When am I going to start really selling? What does my blog look like? Do I have subscribers? I guess I am going to keep at it until I find all the answers.

I have learned a lot with SBI . I have become confident with creating and maintaining my own web site. Best of all: I have enjoyed every step of the way.
